Another very good college prospect in Arizona's loaded 2022 Class of prospects is Brophy Prep's 6-foot-4 rising junior guard Patrick Chew. The son of one of the top recruiters in the country, long-time successful college coach Isaac Chew, Patrick is developing into a serious college prospect, and college programs around the country are quickly taking notice, as the talented performer has already received several scholarship offers for himself and has many college programs in the pursuit.
Father Isaac Chew brought his son to the state of Arizona a little over a year ago, when he decided to accept an opportunity as an assistant coach at Grand Canyon University on former Head Coach, Dan Majerle's staff. GCU decided to go in a different direction this spring with their basketball program, but Chew remains at the program in a different capacity. The opportunity to remain at GCU and in Arizona, and also provide a level of consistency for his son and family was too much for Chew to pass up. As a result, Patrick Chew is flourishing at Brophy Prep and is now regarded as one of the state's top overall prospects.
Patrick Chew is coming off a strong sophomore season for Brophy Prep, where he immediately inserted himself into a talented Brophy Prep lineup and helped lead the program to a state playoff berth, before the team eventually fell to a surging Perry HS program (43-42) in the 6A state playoffs at home in very narrow fashion. The future now looks very bright for the Broncos as the program sports numerous talented young prospects for the future, and Chew is a major reason for the projected success of the Brophy Prep program.
Currently, Chew has received offers already from UTEP, Cleveland State and Kennesaw State - a very impressive fact as he is merely entering his junior season. Chew is also receiving strong interest from Pepperdine, Colorado State, Princeton, Grand Canyon, Rice, East Carolina, UNC-Charlotte, Hawaii, Air Force, UC-Riverside, South Dakota and Austin Peay.
Most prospects don't start receiving this quality level of recruitment until after their junior seasons, but Chew is well ahead of the recruiting game, as college coaches across the country have known him since birth, as a result of the strong relationships and reputation father Isaac Chew has developed over the years, while being considered as one of the nation's top recruiters in the collegiate ranks. Sons of basketball fathers are always intriguing, as they have a developed an early understanding of the game, as a result of being around the game daily throughout their development as a player and person.
Patrick Chew, at 6-4 in height, is a bigger combo-guard prospect that enjoys playing on or off the basketball. He is a very big point guard prospect that is a play-maker with the ball in his hands and makes plays for himself and others. He enjoys having the basketball in his hands and making plays off the dribble in the half-court set, in the open floor or while slashing to the basket, where he is a good finisher in traffic.
Chew looks to make players around him better and get his team into the offensive set, but he also likes to score the basketball when off the ball or as needed, as well. He is a very good ball handler and passer that see the floor, and also pushes the basketball. He has developed his perimeter shooting over the last year, and now shoots with consistency from longer ranges, which sets up his drives to the basket quite well. He has a good mid-range game, a lost art with many of today's players, and does not mind physical contact when getting into the lane against bigger defenders, where he uses a variety of floaters to finish around the basket.
Chew is also an active rebounder that competes hard on the glass, and will continue to improve in this area of his game as he continues to mature. An excellent defender, his best asset. Chew plays passing lanes well and is an excellent one-on-one defender that takes pride in his defense, and enjoys accepting challenges on the court - guarding the opposing team's best player without permission. A future lock-down defender over time, and an aspect of his game that will ultimately raise eyebrows over time in his college recruitment.
Of course, Chew is an excellent student as well and takes pride in his academics - a true example of a student-athlete. The academics at Brophy Prep are as good as any school's academics in the West, so I look for many Ivy League and Patriot League programs to soon look to recruit Chew.
I will continue to follow the recruitment and continued development of this young man closely over the next (18) months, and will look to bring you any updates on him as they continue to develop, but this is definitely another prospect on the rise in the state.
