Former Westwind Prep Academy 7-foot prep post Jeremiah April surprised everyone when he signed a national letter of intent with the University of Indiana Hoosiers in the spring of 2014. After spending a year at the program and playing very little, April chose to transfer this spring. After considering his options for the future, April has decided to head the juco route.
While a prep post at Westwind Prep and after seeing his college recruitment go up and down, April received a scholarship offer from Indiana while then associate head coach Steve McClain was in Arizona to see him work out. April quickly gave a verbal commitment to the Big-10 program - sight unseen. April developed nicely while at Indiana, but failed to receive any serious playing time while playing for the Hoosiers. As a result, April chose to transfer this spring.
"I could have stayed there, but I wanted to be closer to the West," said April.
April advised me that he had numerous offers from mid-major division-I programs after leaving Indiana, but that he wants to play for another high-major division-I program. April stated that he would like to play for Arizona State after a year in the juco ranks.
Arizona State new head coach Bob Hurley was not interested in April this spring, but could be interested in the post prospect after a strong performance in junior college.
April decided this week that he will attend Trinity Valley JC (TX), one of the top-rated junior college programs in the country. April will spend one season at Trinity, his sophomore season, before moving on to another division-I program.
After a high school career locally at Joy Christian HS where April was considered a post project and saw his college recruitment tail off late, April ventured to Westwind Prep to improve his game and his body in an attempt to develop as a post prospect for the next level. April helped lead his high school program to an impressive 32-2 overall record during his senior season, and a Division-IV state championship.
I will continue to follow the college recruitment of April next season, and bring you any updates as they continue to develop.
Arizona Hoop Review Scouting Report: April was once a serious post project, but after a prep year and a year in the Big-10 Conference, he has developed a great deal and is now a serious post prospect - among the best available post prospects in the West. After developing a great deal over the past year and maturing physically a great deal, April has become a legitimate post prospect for the mid-major plus division-I level or higher. April has developed his overall feel for the game and ability to score the basketball around the paint, while becoming a much better factor on the glass - blocking or changing shots with his long wingspan. There are not many prospects with April’s sheer size and length, as well as such a glaring upside for the future. He runs the floor hard and is a good finisher. Has very good potential with continued development and hard work. A good looking post prospect that should continue to develop over time and should have a bright future.
