Shaun Wahlstrom Geared Up for the Spring

by Justin Vargas | Posted on Monday, April 2nd, 2018

This weekend The Spring Tip-Off will take place in Los Angeles, California with just about all the top 16U and 17U AAU programs hitting the I-10 out that way to get the travel circuit kicked off.  One of those programs will be the Alvin Gentry Elite, who will be taking part in their first tournament of the Spring.  They will be doing so with Estrella Foothills’ 6-foot-8 2019 hard-nosed and skilled forward, Shaun Wahlstrom.

Wahlstrom had a breakout year this past high school season, playing next to Sacramento State-commit Grant Greabell. He was a driving force behind an Estrella team that went 21-7 and went to the 4A State playoffs before losing to the eventual state champion, Shadow Mountain.

Wahlstrom displayed his wide range of skills on the court all year long. Not only was he the blue-collared type of player you would imagine him to be on the eye test, but he displayed some skill on the perimeter as well. He shot it at a high rate, especially when he was able to get his feet set at the top of the key. He showed an ability to get a defender in the air and put the ball on the deck and ran the pick-and-roll with Greabell like a college veteran forward. He rebounded at a extremely high rate and showed off some athleticism with blocked shots and above-the-rim dunks.

That combination of strength and athleticism was on full display on January 25th in Casa Grande, as Wahlstrom got the ball out on a fast-break and bit every defender down the court. He rose up to flush it home and as he dunk the ball through the net, the glass backboard shattered and came down on him. Game would end with Estrella Foothills winning 77-50 on the road.

Shaun will play for Head Coach Amp Lee in a frontcourt alongside Hillcrest Prep’s 6-foot-9 big man J.B. Mukeba. Mukeba’s athleticism and size inside will allow Wahlstrom to play out on the perimeter, and do some of the things that make him a legit Division-I prospect.  The team’s guard play will be the story-teller for how they do on the tournament trail.  If the play of the backcourt can hold up, it will allow Wahlstrom to really showcase his skillset.

This spring should be an interesting one for Wahlstrom as he hits the national circuit. After returning from L.A., Wahlstrom and Gentry Elite will get ready for the Hoop Group Jam Fest in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on April 20th-22nd.
