Arizona Preps Q&A: Leo Torbor

by Chris Monter | Posted on Wednesday, September 15th, 2021

NBA scout and draft expert for many years, Chris Monter (Monter Draft News) has joined the Arizona Preps' staff, and recently hit the road on behalf of Arizona Preps to cover some of Arizona's top prospects. In the process, Monter covered and featured the Arizona travel programs in participation - interviewing their top prospects and evaluating their play during the competition.

Leo Torbor, a 6-foot-4 guard from Brooklyn Park (MN) Park Center, had a strong summer with his AAU team, and it has paid dividends as he has received increased recruiting attention. Torbor averaged 7.0 points per game this past season. He scored in double figures in five of (21) games, as the Pirates finished 16-5 - losing to then-undefeated Champlain Park 69-63 in overtime in the section finals. Torbor scored a season-high 16 points in an 81-78 loss to Champlin Park in the regular season.

Arizona Preps caught up with Torbor to learn the latest on his college recruitment and senior season.

Arizona Preps: How pleased are you with how you played this summer with your AAU team?

Leo Torbor: I feel like it was my coming out party. I always had the potential to breakout and it started during the season when I was playing for Coach Ware at Park Center. I was blossoming and as soon as I got to AAU, I just started becoming more aggressive. Trying to prove myself and I made a name for myself this summer.

Arizona Preps: How much do you think your game has changed from last year at this time until now?

Leo Torbor: I feel like I became more of a ballhandler. Creating for my teammates. Always becoming a better finisher and add to it by putting more moves in my bag than just rebounding. I went from playing “big man” role to now actually playing a guard role. Coach Ware really helped me. Braeden (Carrington, a Minnesota commit) also. Playing with him has taught me a few things as well.

Arizona Preps: What offers do you have right now?

Leo Torbor: The only offer right now I have is North Dakota State, but San Jose State (which has since offered), Wyoming, South Dakota State and a few more have texted me heavily.

Arizona Preps: You have high expectations for the upcoming season. You have Braeden, who recently committed to Minnesota and have a lot of guys back from last year. What are the expectations for the Pirates this year?

Leo Torbor: I feel like we are destined to become a top team since Cody Benabaker (averaged 22.8 points per game for St. Francis last year) just transferred there. We return Ayouba Berthe (8.0 points per game), James Spencer and J.J. Ware
