D’Maurian Williams Shines in Vegas

Head Coach Jerome Joseph and the Powerhouse 17U Elite team got underway in Las Vegas for the Bigfoot Easter Classic on Thursday evening as they took on the 702 Attack (NV), a scrappy team with a whole lot of high motors and dog-mentalities that make up for their lack of size. Powerhouse found themselves down by double digits for a nice chunk of minutes during the game, but led by their newly acquired 6-foot-4 junior guard D’Maurian “Shaq” Williams (Avondale Westview HS), they forged a good comeback win, escaping with a 5-point victory in their first pool game.

Williams came into the game as the most aggressive player on the floor, getting to the rim at will and got easy buckets and created some foul trouble for some of the Attack’s interior guys. With a grown man body, Williams is much shiftier than he appears and has a nice hesitation game coming off the bounce. His ability to put it on the deck and create for himself and his teammates is impressive. He led all Powerhouse scorers with 12 points and 5 assists in a very balanced attack. In this game, he looked like the best player on the floor.

But all good is does not come with some bad. Williams struggled from the free-throw line, where he is usually pretty steady at. From a development standpoint, he needs to work on his shot from the perimeter. While it was not exposed in this game, eventually it could be. While it is not a broken shot, it is one that needs more lift to be consistent.

When engaged he is a good defender. However, when he is not he has a tendency to reach instead of slide his feet. Nevertheless, you know it is in him because when the game comes alive he sits down on defense and squares up ball-handlers into his chest and has the pride and confidence to let you know about it.

He will play again tomorrow morning at 10:10am against Team Artis Arizona Elite in their second pool game.
