Duel In The Desert Grind Session Top Performers

Deandre Ayton’s Duel in the Desert presented by the Grind Session was a weekend filled with high level basketball. Some of the best prep schools in the area and also from long distances were in attendance. The field included three Arizona prep schools Hillcrest Prep, Bella Vista Prep and AZ Compass Prep.  Three California prep schools Prolific Prep, Balboa School & Veritas Prep attended, one school from Nevada, Trinity International, and Orangeville Prep, all the way from Canada was also in attendance. The games were all very competitive and they showcased some of the state's top grassroot's talent.  On the weekend, records were as follows - Bella Vista Prep (2-0), Hillcrest Prep (1-1), Prolific Prep (1-1), Balboa School (1-1), Orangeville Prep (1-1), Trinity International (1-1), Veritas Prep (1-1), Hillcrest Prep North (0-1) and AZ Compass Prep (0-2).  Below is a summary of the weekend's most impressive performers on the weekend.

Grind Session Top Performers

Kyree Walker, 6’6, 2020, Guard- Hillcrest Prep (Phoenix, AZ)

Kyree who is one of the top prospects in the country and the #13 ranked player on 247Sports had a very impressive weekend.  Kyree is a dynamic guard who has elite athleticism, matched with a very good overall skillset.  He showed he can get to the rim and finish when he wants, created plays for his teammates and also showed he can knock down pull-up jumpers and threes at a high level.  He is a very explosive player that can take over a game at any moment.  He has a ton of upside, but will only continue to get better as he matures. Recently Kyree reopened his recruitment and is in high demand for a lot of college programs.

Daishen Nix, 6’3, 2020, Guard- Trinity International (Las Vegas, NV)

Daishen had the most impressive weekend out of any player competing in the Grind Session event last  weekend. The #28 ranked player on Rivals.com proved that he could very well be the best point guard in the 2020 class. Nix is a big time athlete, has a great feel for the game, very crafty with the ball, makes his teammates better, has unbelievable court vision/ passing ability and can score the ball from any spot on the floor. He has a very calm demeanor, basketball IQ, and playmaking ability that seemed to show signs of a future pro. He almost led his team to a win against Bella Vista Prep as he had 31 points, 6 Assists & 6 Steals. He turned around the next night and had 22 pts, 6 Rebs & 3 Assists in a win against Balboa School. Daishen has offers from Arizona, Kansas, Gonzaga, UCLA, Minnesota and Maryland to name a few.

Nimari Burnett, 6’4, 2020, Guard, Prolific Prep (Napa Valley, CA)

Nimari is a very intriguing prospect out of Chicago, Illinois who had a very impressive weekend for his team.  The #26 ranked player on ESPN proved he is one of the best guards in his class.  He is a long, lanky and athletic guard that has a very well rounded skill set to match. Burnett can make plays off the bounce, can knock down tough pull up jumpers, and can shoot the ball at a very high level off the catch from 3. Burnett stepped up big for his team in an overtime battle against Hillcrest Prep, where he knocked down a deep 3 pointer to give his team the lead late before eventually losing by 2 points on a last second tip in. Burnett is an electric player that will only improve down the road. He currently has offers from Arizona, Cal, Gonzaga, Illinois, Louisville, Marquette, Michigan and Texas A&M.

Terry Armstrong, 6’7, 2019, Guard, Bella Vista Prep (Phoenix, AZ)

Terry, Flint,Michigan native, is a very impressive prospect who recently committed to the University of Arizona.  Terry who is the #57 rated player on rivals.com is an exciting player. He combines length and athleticism with skill. Terry is very good finisher especially in transition, has a good handle that allows him to create off the dribble and he can stretch the floor and knock down mid-range jumpers, as well as threes. His size makes him a very tough matchup on both ends of the floor, especially when he runs his motor. Terry helped lead his team to two big wins against Balboa School and Orangeville Prep, and was also MVP of their game one victory.  He has a lot of upside and should be a very effective player for the Arizona Wildcats.

Addison Patterson, 6’7, 2020, Guard, Bella Vista Prep (Phoenix, AZ)

Milton, Ontario, Canada native Patterson is another impressive prospect for Bella Vista. The #22 ranked player on rivals.com showed nothing but versatility all weekend. Patterson is a long and athletic guard who can do a ton of different things well on the court.  He can shoot 3s consistently, penetrate off the dribble into pull ups or to get all the way to the rim and finish in a variety of ways. Patterson also has the ability to create for his teammates, is a strong defender and was even making highlight blocks. He also showcased his athletic ability with a huge poster dunk to help them eventually win in overtime vs Trinity International. Patterson was named MVP of their game two victory over Orangeville Prep. Patterson currently has offers from Illinois, Arizona State, Florida, Syracuse & Oklahoma to name a few.

Malcolm Little, 6’3, 2019, Guard, Balboa School (San Diego, CA)

Malcolm is a very intriguing senior prospect who had the single most impressive performance over the weekend. In their first game he helped lead his team to a huge victory over Hillcrest Prep where he had 37 of his teams 68 points. Malcolm is a tough, smart, aggressive guard who can score it in bunches. He can shoot it with unlimited range at a high level from 3, creates open looks off the bounce for pull ups, floaters or finishes at the rim. He is also very good in transition and finishes in a variety of ways. He is a good athlete with a college ready body. Malcolm definitely helped his stock rise after this weekend and will absolutely have power 5 schools contacting him.

Tyrese Samuel, 6’8, 2019, Forward, Orangeville Prep (Canada)

Tyrese is a very intriguing prospect from Canada. The #89 ranked player on 247Sports had an impressive weekend and showcased his very versatile skill set. He is long, athletic, and skilled. He can attack the rim off the bounce either way and can finish in a variety of ways. He can shoot it from pull up range and three, has a very good motor and is also a very good passer/playmaker. His size and well rounded skill set makes him very tough to matchup with as he creates matchup problems.  He currently has Baylor, Georgetown, Providence, Virginia, Syracuse, Witchita State, Virginia Tech and  TCU on him to name a few schools.

Dalen Terry, 6’5, 2020, Forward, Hillcrest Prep (Phoenix, AZ)

Dalen (pictured) is a very intriguing prospect in the loaded 2020 class. He is very long and lanky that is matched with good athleticism. He is a skilled point guard with good handle, play making ability and he can consistently knock down open shots. He also plays with toughness and gets after it. He will only continue to get better as he matures and gets stronger physically. The #36 ranked player on rivals.com has offers from Arizona State, Cal, Marquette, USC & Utah.

Zach Harvey, 6’5, 2020, Guard, Prolific Prep (Napa Valley, CA)

Zach is a very impressive prospect who is originally from Topeka, Kansas.  The #29 ranked prospect on rivals.com has a wide skill set. He is athletic, quick, and has good length. He matches that with the ability to create shots off the dribble, can finish at the rim with either hand, good in transition, can shoot the 3 and competes hard every game. Plays with good pace for his age as well. Zach will only continue to get better and currently has offers from Arizona State, Kansas, Louisville, Oregon, UCLA, Creighton and Ohio State to name a few.

Kuany Kuany, 6’10, 2019, Forward, Prolific Prep (Napa Valley, CA)

Kuany is a very impressive prospect from South Sudan. He is a super long, strong and athletic player with a ton of upside. He is skilled for his size, can create off the dribble, finish over defenders with his size and athleticism, and can knock down open 3s consistently. He also has the ability to make plays for his teammates. Kuany plays with a motor and can be tough to keep off the offensive glass. With his size and skill set Kuany could play basketball for a long time as his his type of ability is seen more at the pro level. Kuany currently has offers from DePaul, Florida State, Georgia, Kansas State and Nevada to name a few.

Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe- 6’7, 2020, Forward, Orangeville Prep (Canada)

Matthew is another intriguing prospect from Canada. The #37 ranked player on 247sports has multiple skill sets that are matched with length, athleticism and a strong body. He is hard to stop from getting to the rim, plays with a serious motor and gets after it on the defensive end. He is very good in transition and also attack’s with an aggressive mentality. He is also a capable shooter. He currently has offers from Florida, Oregon, Arizona State, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, Tulane and Vanderbilt to name a few.

Xavier Dusell, 6’5, 2020, Guard, AZ Compass Prep (Phoenix, AZ)

Xavier had an impressive weekend and showed what he is capable of as a player. He has a dynamic skill set that goes along with good length and athleticism. Xavier can shoot it from 3 at a very high level and has unlimited range with a quick release. He can also create off the dribble, knock down pull ups/floaters and can finish at the rim effectively. Xavier is a High IQ player that will only improve as he gets stronger and more mature. He currently has offers from Idaho State, Montana and Northern Arizona.

Ishmael Cruz, 6’3, 2019, Guard, Veritas Prep (California)

Ismael is a very intriguing prospect from Puerto Rico. Ismael might be the best pure shooter in the field, he has a pure stroke, quick release, unlimited range and great footwork. He is also very crafty when he attacks off the dribble as he uses a variety of floaters and finishes around the rim. Cruz can take over a game with his shooting ability. He’s a high IQ player that understands how to get open. Cruz currently has offers from Colorado, New Mexico and Siena.

Oscar Lopez, 6’4, 2019, Guard, Hillcrest North (Phoenix, AZ)

Oscar is a very intriguing prospect from California and is a recent DePaul commit. Oscar is a tough, gritty and smart player that can do multiple things well. He’s a good athlete that can score from anywhere but has a good play making/passing ability. Oscar competes on both ends and is also a high IQ player. He also shoots it at a high level. Oscar will be a very effective player at DePaul when he steps foot on campus next year.

Dischon Thomas, 6’9, 2019, Forward, Hillcrest Prep (Phoenix, AZ)

Dischon is a very intriguing prospect who just reopened his recruitment. The Durham, NC native is a big, long and athletic player who is also skilled. Dischon is effective In the low/mid post but can also stretch the defense with his shot and he can attack off the dribble and finish in a variety of ways. Dischon is a crafty player that also plays with a motor and can make things happen without the ball in his hands. Dischon currently has looks from UNLV, St Louis, Texas Southern, UC Irvine, SIU to name a few.

Nicolas Elame, 6’4, 2019, Guard, Bella Vista Prep (Phoenix, AZ)

Elame is another intriguing prospect for the loaded Bella Vista roster. The Orleans, France native along with Cruz from Veritas is one of the top shooters in the field. He can shoot it from anywhere and shot it at a high level this past weekend. He is capable off the dribble and can finish as he has good athleticism but he is the definition of a dead 3. Elame also competes hard and can make plays on both ends of the floor. He currently has offers from Fresno State, North Dakota, UTEP and UC Santa Barbara to name a few.

Shemar Rathan Mayes, 5’11, 2020, Guard, Orangeville Prep (Canada)

Shemar had a great weekend for his team as he led his team in scoring against Veritas Prep in their first game. He’s a quick, crafty and skilled PG. Mayes shoots it at a high level from 3 but also is very effective creating for himself and others off the bounce. He can run a team at an efficiency level and that will only improve as he gets older. Mayes will see his interest improve after this weekend.

Devan Cambridge, 6’6, 2019, Guard, Hillcrest Prep (Phoenix, AZ)

Devan is a very intriguing prospect out of Nashville, Tennessee. He is a very explosive athlete that can finish with power in transition or get offensive tip back dunks. Cambridge is also a very capable shooter from and can also create off the bounce. Defensively he gets after it and uses his elite athleticism to his advantage. Cambridge had a very impressive game two against Prolific Prep in an overtime win as he was MVP with 13 points & 7 Rebs. He currently has looks from Auburn, Georgia Tech, Florida, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Western Kentucky.

Dre Harris, 6’7, 2020, Forward, Hillcrest Prep (Phoenix, AZ)

Dre is a very intriguing prospect who also had a big weekend. Dre is a big, strong, physical player who also has a good skill set. Dre has good touch around the rim, can attack off the dribble and finish over defenders, and he can also knock down an open 3. Dre also plays with a motor and is tough to keep off the glass. Dre had the game winning tip in against Prolific Prep in overtime. He currently has offers from TCU, Grand Canyon, Oakland, Central Arkansas to name a few.

Daylen Holman, 6’6, 2020, Guard, Bella Vista Prep (Phoenix, AZ)

Daylen is a very impressive prospect from Norman, Oklahoma. The #62 ranked player on Rivals.com is a big, long and athletic PG. Holman is very crafty and can make plays for his teammates with his passing ability. He can get to the rim when he wants and is a crafty finisher. He can also shoot it from 3 and has a capable in between game. Holman will only get better as he gets stronger and matures. He currently holds offers Houston, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss and Tulsa.
