Ironwood Defeats Sunnyslope On the Road in 5A Battle

On Friday evening, a home match-up for Sunnyslope and Ironwood High School took place in exciting fashion, in a 5A Conference Northwest section game. Prior to this game, both teams have played twice before this season and split those decisions (1-1 in the season series). Both of these teams are two of the elite teams in the 5A Division, and it showed again this game, as it was competitive from start to finish.

To begin the first quarter, Ironwood (18-2) came out firing and started the game on a 7-0 run. Sunnyslope (15-5) immediately answered with a run of their own, and took a 10-9 lead with 3:20 to go in the 1st quarter.

Sunnyslope continued to score the ball at a high rate, and went into the second quarter with a 17-11 lead. Sunnyslope continued their strong play in the second quarter, as they took command early and really controlled the pace of the quarter. Slope went into the half with a 37-27 lead.

To begin the 3rd quarter, Ironwood made a run and chipped away at the lead. They got it down to 41-34 with 4:13 to go in the 3rd. From there it was a back-and-forth battle on both ends of the floor, and Sunnyslope went into the 4th quarter with a 45-40 lead.

Ironwood continued to chip away early in the 4th and was able to gain the lead, 54-53, with 4:56 to go in the game. From then on, Ironwood controlled the lead, but, after missing a shot with a two-point lead late in the game, Sunnyslope was able to capitalize - scoring in order to tie it at 61-61 and sending the game to overtime.

To begin overtime, Sunnyslope scored first with a free-throw to take a 62-61 lead, but from then on, Ironwood took control. Ironwood was able to seal the game with free throws and ended up winning it 71-64.

Ironwood Improved to 18-2 on the season and 3-1 in conference play. Sunnyslope is currently 15-5 and 2-2 in conference play.

Ironwood was led by senior guard Trent Hudgens and senior Dominic Gonzales. Sunnyslope was led by senior Paul Hayden and sophomore guard Oakland Fort.

Sophomore forward Elijah Saunders and junior post Carson Basham didn’t have their best statistical games, but are a couple of the top players in the state for Sunnyslope HS.
