Ironwood Defeats Sunrise Mountain in 5A Northwest Match-up

Tuesday evening, a 5A Northwest Section match-up between Ironwood and Sunrise Mountain High School took place on Ironwood's home floor. Both teams are having very solid seasons so far and were looking to gain ground within their conference, which is one of the tougher 5A conferences within the state.

To begin the game, both teams competed hard from the opening tip and both teams traded baskets early, as Ironwood (21-2) held a 9-8 lead with 5:30 to go in the first.

Sunrise Mountain (15-6) responded with a 10-2 run to take a 18-11 lead with 2:10 to go in the quarter.

Ironwood was able to battle back and made a run to end the quarter, as Sunrise Mountain ended the quarter with a 22-17 lead.

To begin the 2nd quarter, Ironwood came out on a quick 12-0 run and were able to take a 29-22 lead with 5:10 to go in the half. Sunrise Mountain was able to slow them down somewhat for the rest of the quarter and chipped away at the lead, but Ironwood made some plays late, and went into the half with a 44-35 lead.

To begin the 3rd quarter, Ironwood tried to throw a knockout blow, as they put together a big run to give them a 55-41 lead with 4:30 to go in the period.

Sunrise Mountain was able to chip away and ended the quarter on a 13-2 run, which gave Ironwood a slim 57-54 lead going into the final quarter.

Ironwood responded with a run of their own to start the 4th, and led 67-56 with 4 minutes to go in the game. Sunrise Mountain got it down to 67-61 with 2 minutes to go, but Ironwood made the necessary plays late to close out the game, as they won 72-63.

Ironwood improved to 21-2 on the season and 6-1 in 5A Northwest Section play. Sunrise Mountain is now 15-6 and 3-3 in 5A Northwest Section play.

Ironwood was led again by the play of senior guard Trent Hudgens, senior Dominic Gonzales (pictured) and senior David Teibo. Sunrise Mountain was led by senior Tanner Mayer, junior Colin Carey and junior Jaisheldon Yates.
