Ironwood Wins First 5A State Title With Huge Win Over Millennium

On the campus of Arizona State this week, the highly anticipated 5A State Championship match-up between Millennium and Ironwood High School took place. Both teams had very strong seasons and were the top two seeds in the 5A Bracket.

To begin the game, both teams came out competing at a high level and it was an up-tempo back-and-forth game early. Millennium took an early 7-5 lead, but Ironwood was able to respond and took a 10-9 lead of their own with (3) minutes to go in the first quarter.

Ironwood was able to maintain control of the game the rest of the quarter, as they took a 19-16 lead going into the second period. To begin the second quarter, Ironwood maintained the lead the whole quarter, but it remained a close game, as both teams took turns trading baskets in the half-court and in transition.

Ironwood took a commanding 42-33 lead going into halftime.

To begin the third quarter, Ironwood came out focused, as they were able to stretch the lead to 50-40 with 4:30 left to go in the quarter.

Millennium was able to make some plays late in the quarter to chip away at the lead, as it was 57-51, going into the final quarter.

In the 4th period, Millennium was able to put pressure on Ironwood, as they got it down to four - 59-55 with 6:30 to go in the quarter.

Ironwood responded with a three to stretch the lead back to 7 points.

Millennium responded again and got it down to two points, 64-62, with 4 minutes to go in the game.

Ironwood was then able to respond with a 5-0 run to extend the lead to 69-62. Ironwood held a 70-66 lead with 1:55 to go, then stretched that to a 73-66 lead.

Millennium was able to knock down a couple shots and make some defensive plays to get it to a one possession game, 73-70, Ironwood with :30 seconds to go. Millennium came down on that possession and turned the ball over, which resulted in Ironwood free throws.

Ironwood would close the game out with free throws to eventually win the game 78-70. Ironwood finished the season 28-2, and Millennium HS finished the season 24-6 overall.

Ironwood was led by their senior guards Trent Hudgens (17 Points, pictured) and Dominic Gonzales (16 Points).

Millennium was led by their highly recruited junior duo - Justus Jackson (14 Points) and Daron Holmes (17 Points).
