Program Spotlight: Heritage Academy

In our Program Spotlight, Arizona Preps' staff writer George Courtney takes a look inside to one of the state's top up-and-coming programs, Heritage Academy. Located in Maricopa, Arizona, Heritage Academy is coming off a runner-up performance for the CAA State Title this past season.

“Run-Gun and have some FUN”, says Coach James Deakyne. Coach Deakyne is bringing back “The System,” which was made popular by Coach Paul Westhead.

“Our philosophy is to put up more shots than our opponents, while racing to triple digits every game,” said Coach Deakyne.

The Runnin’ Heroes are coming off an impressive 16-4 season, where Coach Deakyne’s Runnin’ Heroes had a state runner-up finish in the Canyon Athletic Association’s (CAA) Division-III.

The Heroes had (5), nearly (6) players average double-digits in scoring last season. The average time of possession was 6.5 seconds or less. As a team, the Heroes led the nation in scoring with 94.3 points per game. The top two scorers were guards 6-foot sophomore guard Josh Deakyne (24.9 points per/game-pictured) and 6-foot-2 sophomore guard Logan Porter (24.1 points per/game).

In a big off-season move, 6-foot-5 junior guard-forward Jose Miguel (26 points per/game last season) announced he was transferring over, which loads up the Heroes’ backcourt for next season.

Coach Deakyne then decided to put his team in the CAA’s New Open Division and play a national schedule.

“The goal from the start was to be a Prep Program to help gain our kids exposure and get them ready for the next level,” said Deakyne.

It should be interesting the way things pan out with the CAA announcing an addition of a loaded Open Division - making it the first division of it’s kind in the State of Arizona. Coach Deakyne and his Runnin’ Heroes are patiently waiting for the pandemic shut down to end to get ready for what next season holds.
