Program Spotlight: San Tan Charter High School

San Tan Charter High School may have a small enrollment, but the program has accomplished a lot over the last few years under Head Coach Derek Freeman (pictured). Coach Freeman starts his third year as the Head Boys Varsity Coach. In his tenure as the head coach, his program sent (6) different student-athletes to the next level (JUCO, NCAA D-2, NCAA D-3 and NAIA). The Roadrunners have finished in the Final Four, during the 2018-19 season, and won it all this past season - winning the CAA Title.

Coach Freeman is a coach who coaches for the right reasons.

“The sport of basketball has given so much to me," said Freeman. "I have been blessed with travel experiences, education and career opportunities. I just want to give back, by sharing my experiences with my student athletes - by serving them as their coach and mentor,” said Coach Freeman.

This is Coach Freeman’s 5th season coaching at San Tan Charter, and the start of his 3rd year as the Varsity Boys Head Basketball Coach.

Coach Freeman has a great philosophy and approach to coaching the game. He relies on a 9-man rotation to keep the guys on the floor fresh. With his 9-man rotation, he expects his guys to defend to create offensive transition opportunities. If the transition offense isn’t there, his team is disciplined enough to pull out the ball, and look to pick apart the opposing defense.

The 2020-2021 season will be different for Coach Freeman’s Roadrunners, as they are transitioning from the Canyon Athletic Association (CAA) to the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA).

“We are excited for the opportunity to play new teams and be in a league with a bigger quantity of teams. I am making sure my guys stay humble and hungry, so we can stay competitive against our new opponents. We are also excited to showcase our athletes on a slightly bigger stage in the AIA,” said Coach Freeman.

I have been fortunate to see Coach Freeman’s team in action last season, as we coached against each other. One of the things that stood out the most to me was his team’s discipline. They make sure to pay attention to all the fine details and execute Coach Freeman’s system precisely.

Coach Freeman returns (4) key players next season: Demetrius Johnson (5-foot-11 Senior Combo-Guard), Andrew Yeahquo (6-foot-8 Senior Forward), Tajai Price (6-foot Senior Combo-Guard) and Cole Foote (6-foot Senior Combo-Guard).

Coach Freeman’s Junior Varsity team had a strong showing last season as well. It doesn’t look like San Tan Charter will be rebuilding, more over reloading for this upcoming season. They are coming off of a CAA Division-III State Championship. Division-III was the toughest division in the CAA last season with teams like Heritage Academy, Maricopa, Southwest Leadership, Sequoia Pathway Academy, Basis Scottsdale, Basis Chandler, Eduprize and Canyon State Academy.

The Arizona Preps' staff is excited to see how San Tan Charter competes in the AIA (2A) next season, and wish them the best in their program's future.
