Tuesday night, Skyline High School (15-2) matched up against Mesa HS in a conference match-up. Skyline HS is having a strong season so far, as they are sitting at 15-2 on the season and Mesa is having a solid season as they are sitting at 6-9 overall. Both teams competed hard last night, in what was a competitive game for a majority of the game.

In the first quarter, Skyline threw the first punch and jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, but Mesa responded with a run of their own to take a 11-9 lead, halfway into the first quarter. Skyline was able to respond and never looked back after that.

Mesa hung around and was down two points with 5 minutes to go in the 2nd quarter, as it was 22-20 Skyline. Skyline was able to make a run and went into the half with a 38-30 lead.

To start the 3rd period it was much of the same, as both teams made small runs, back-and-forth for most of the quarter, and Skyline ended the 3rd with a 51-45 lead.

Skyline turned up the intensity on both ends of the floor, which proved to be too much for Mesa, as Skyline was able to pull away, and ended up winning the game 65-50 to improve their record to 15-2 on the season.

Skyline was led by a trio of players, 2020 senior and Northern Arizona signee Dayton Harris (pictured), 2020 senior post Tyree Tyler and 2020 senior forward Tanner Poeschl. Mesa HS 2021 junior guard Steven Cervantes led the way for Mesa HS.

Currently, Skyline has looked like one of the stronger teams in 6A for Arizona high school basketball, and don’t be surprised if they continue to play well and make a deep run into the 6A State Playoffs.
